The symposium comprises of 4 invited speakers on issues of managing risks in the areas of Sukuk, Islamic Equity Fund, Islamic Private Equity Fund, Takaful and Islamic Banking Industry, and a panel discussion on issues regarding the risks in Islamic finance industry. Participants were enlighten about the types of risks and various ways to manage risks in these specific areas. The question and answer session at the end of each presentation provided further insights on the designated issues.

Event Summary
This symposium was a joint effort between INCEIF?s Centre for Islamic Wealth Management (CIWM) and BNP Paribas Malaysia to shed some light on the potential risks in various topics in Islamic Finance. The highlight of the symposium was the launching of the SRI (Socially Responsible Investment) Booklet by INCEIF?S Deputy President Academic Professor Datuk Dr. Syed Othman Alhabshi, BNP Paribas Malaysia?s Chairman Dato?Abdullah Mat Noh and Malaysian Islamic Finance Centre (MIFC) Promotion Unit Director Mr. Nik Mohamed Din Nik Musa. The production of this booklet was a joint effort between CIWM and MIFC to address important and interesting issues to the readers. Each of the participants received one copy each with few additional copies to be distributed in their companies.
The first session kicked off with the first invited speaker from UK Islamic Finance Council, Mr Omar Shaikh with the topic Managing Risk in the Islamic Private Equity Fund Industry. This topic highlighted the various risks in Islamic Private Equity Fund Industry and ways to mitigate these risks. He also highlighted the emerging trend in Islamic Finance Industry- the initiatives to create a Tayyab asset class to provide better diversification opportunities for fund managers in the Industry.
Managing Risk in the Islamic Fund Industry, Mr. Monem Salam, Saturna Sdn Bhd
He highlighted the various risks in this Islamic fund industry and an innovative approach to embrace (instead to avoid) risks and manage it effectively. In his Q & A session, his shared his experience in this new approach to manage risks, that did not have to sacrifice returns when addressing the risks.
Managing Risk in the Sukuk Industry, Mr. Nik Ahmad Zaki, RHB Bank
He explained the major risks involved in Sukuk both in the local and international market. He shared his vast experience on addressing the challenges in Sukuk Capital Market.
Managing Risk in The Islamic Private Equity Fund Industry, Mr. Omar Shaikh, Islamic Finance Council, UK
The final session of the symposium was a panel discussion on Managing Risks in Islamic Finance Industry – Issues in Practice. Mr. Ziyaad Mahomed, a PhD candidate in INCEIF and also the Managing Director of Islamic Finance Institute of Southern Africa (IFISA) moderated the session. The panel comprised the four invited speakers and DPA of INCIF, Professor Datuk Dr. Syed Othman Alhabshi. This session recapped the main points of every speaker?s speech with more detailed discussion followed by Q & A session. The panel discussion that was planned for 60 minutes lasted 90 minutes due to active participation from the audience on the interesting practical issues highlighted by the panellists.

Event Summary
This one-day Symposium was a joint event by BNP Paribas – INCEIF Centre of Islamic Wealth Management and Labuan International Business and Financial Centre (LIBFC) to raise national awareness of Islamic wealth management in various areas especially in Islamic trusts and foundations. The symposium?s curtains were drawn with welcoming remarks by Mr Saiful Bahari Baharom, Chief Executive Officer of LIBFC Inc followed by INCEIF?s Chief Academic Officer Prof. Datuk Dr. Syed Othman Alhabshi.
The symposium was structured to be effective by dividing it into two parts, which were the talks and the panel discussions. Both of these parts were further divided into 2 sessions covering numerous topics.
Prof. Dr Abbas Mirakhor, the first holder of INCEIF Chair of Islamic Finance graciously started the first session of the talk with the title ?Sovereign Wealth Funds and Shared Prosperity: Should Malaysia Champion it??. This topic brought about the connection of Islamic Finance Wealth Management and a better life by sharing the prosperity in the society in the Islamic way. He also discussed regarding the systems of capitalism and its problems in the world of finance.
The second part of the symposium was the panel discussion. The two titled discussions were; ?Seeking Diversification Islamic Investment Products? and ?How can practitioners Best meet the Demands and Challenges of the Nascent Islamic Wealth Management Industry? respectively.

Among the topic suggestions for the next symposium are Capital Market, Riba, Takaful, Sukuk, Captive Insurance and many others.

Labuan IBFC's International Waqf Foundation, Che Jamaliah Abdul Thahir
Session 2 of the talk titled ?Labuan IBFC?s International Waqf Foundation? presented by the manager, Head of Islamic Finance Unit, Labuan Financial Services Authority (LFSA) Ms Che Jamaliah Abdul Thahir. Her talk introduced the participants to the Waqf system, relating how it was used conventionally and how to use this knowledge in the current world. In addition, she also presented to all attendees on the growth of Islamic finance all around the world.
Both sessions lasted for an hour including a 15 minutes Q&A time allocation.
Panel Discussion: Demands and Challenges of the Nascent Islamic Wealth Management Industry
The first discussion was moderated by Nik Norishky Thani, Head of Special Project (Islamic) Permodalan Nasioanl Berhad and the line of panellists were Datuk Dr. Mohd Daud Bakar (Group Chairman, Amanie Advisors), Mohd Radzuan A Tajuddin (General Manager & Head Development Department Islamic Capital Market, Securities Commission Malaysia) and Angelia Chin-Sharpe (Chief Executive Officer & Country Head, BNP Paribas Investment Partners Malaysia)
The second discussion was led by Ziyaad Mahomed, Managing Director of Islamic Finance Institute of Southern Africa (IFISA) with the panellists Dr Aida Othman (Partner, Zaid Ibrahim & Co), Prof Datuk Dr. Syed Othman Alhabshi, Monem Salam (Director, Saturna Capital Corporation; President & Fund Manager, Saturna Sdn Bhd) and Datin Isharidah Ishak (Consultant, M/S Isharidah, Ho, Chong & Menon).
The symposium successfully attracted 152 participants from various countries and backgrounds. At the end of the sessions, evaluation forms consisting of 5 questions (4 objectives – 1 open ended question) were distributed to them to rate the overall performance of the event and to give related feedbacks.
